The tapetum lucidum is made up of tiny crystals that reflect light back out of the eye. When a beam of light enters the eye, it travels through the lens and onto the retina, where it is converted into electrical impulses that the brain can interpret. However, some of the light that enters the eye is not absorbed by the retina and instead reflects off the tapetum lucidum, creating a glowing effect.
